Benzene is a colorless, flammable, hydrocarbon liquid. It is part of the aromatic family and has a characteristic sweet odor. Benzene is a basic building block for further petrochemical processing, and is most often used to manufacture styrene, cyclohexane, and cumene.

Production Information

Marathon Petroleum Company LP produces benzene at its Catlettsburg, Ky. refinery, Robinson, Ill., refinery, as well as the Texas City refinery and Galveston Bay refinery, both located in Texas City, Texas. Benzene, along with other aromatics, is produced using a liquid-liquid extraction process. The Catlettsburg refinery utilizes the Sulfolane process. The Robinson refinery uses a BEU (Benzene Extraction Unit.) The Texas City refinery uses the Udex process with a Carom co-solvent.The Galveston Bay refinery uses an ARU (Aromatics Recovery Unit).

Benzene can be transported from Catlettsburg, Robinson, Texas City, and Galveston Bay via barge.
