Aliphatics Benzene Cumene Toluene Xylene

Aliphatic hydrocarbons are mixtures of normal paraffins, isoparaffins, and cycloparaffins. These products are primarily consumed in the oil-based paint, coating, ink, and adhesive industries. Aliphatics are also used for industrial cleaning, dry cleaning, aerosol formulations, lighter fluids, and household products.

Production Information
Marathon Petroleum Company LLC (MPC) produces aliphatic hydrocarbons at the Catlettsburg, Kentucky refinery utilizing an ISO-9002 certified process. Aliphatics are produced by fractionating naphtha and kerosene into eight individual products. With the exception of Non-Exempt Mineral Spirits (NEMS), all of MPC’s aliphatics are specially hydrotreated to remove aromatics and reduce odor. Listed below are the eight specific products:

  • Lacolene
  • VM&P (Varnish Makers and Painters)
  • NEMS (Non-Exempt Mineral Spirits)
  • Mineral Spirits 66
  • Kwik Dri
  • 142 Solvent
  • LOBS (Low Odor Base Solvent)

Transportation
MPC delivers aliphatics via both truck and rail from the Catlettsburg Refinery. In addition, selected products can be barged to terminals where they are available for pickup by truck.
